Students’ big break: Working with Saif, international film festival nomination
Dada Lakhmi Chand State University of Performing and Visual Arts has long been known for attracting students from across India through its acclaimed courses in fashion designing and film & television. Now, its students are taking that legacy further — earning roles in Bollywood films and securing nominations at prestigious international film festivals.
One standout story is that of Arvind Chaudhary, a student from the Faculty of Film and Television. Hailing from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, Arvind recently worked alongside Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan in the upcoming period drama Jamhuriyat. Directed by Rahul Dholakia — best known for the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Raees — the film explores the political and emotional landscape of post-Independence India, focusing on the nation’s first general elections.
“Working with Saif Ali Khan was like a dream come true. The exposure and experience I gained on set were invaluable,” Arvind said, recalling the opportunity. Adding another feather to the university’s cap, Chaman Ramesh Kishan, also from the Faculty of Film and Television, has earned international recognition for his short film The Zero Line.
The film has been officially nominated for the prestigious Balaji Prize in the International Competition category at the Marrakech Short Film Festival, scheduled to be held in Morocco from September 26 to October 1.
“I am proud of both students, who have not only represented the university on an international stage but have also become a source of inspiration for their peers and for aspiring students considering admission to our university to build a career in these creative fields,” said Dr Amit Arya, Vice-Chancellor.
He emphasised that the nomination is a significant milestone, showcasing the creativity, skill and teamwork of the students. The Zero Line, created as part of an academic project by the Acting Department, was praised by the festival jury as “meaningful and powerful”, resonating with audiences through its strong storytelling and impressive filmmaking.
Dr Arya also highlighted the achievements of alumni and faculty members, noting their contributions in Film & Television, Design, Textile and Architecture. To strengthen alumni connections, the university has launched a dedicated alumni portal, which already has over 300 registered graduates. The first Alumni Meet is planned within the next three months, featuring success stories, interactive workshops and mentorship programmes to guide and inspire current students.
Established in 2014, the university houses four faculties — Design, Film & Television, Visual Arts and Urban Planning & Architecture. It offers 15 undergraduate, four postgraduate and 17 diploma/certificate programmes, along with PhD courses in selected fields. For hands-on training, the Faculty of Film & Television features two film sets and an editing lab with 19 cubicles.
“While all our programmes receive strong interest, Fashion Designing and Film & Television are particularly in demand,” Dr Arya noted. “Unlike many private institutes with higher fee and less experienced faculty, we offer affordable courses taught by skilled professionals.”
