Suppliers of illegal weapons, liquor, drugs remained active throughout 2024
The illegal trade of drugs, liquor smuggling, gambling and illegal weapons continued unabated in Gurugram this year, according to data released by the city police. A total of 336 individuals were arrested in connection with illegal arms, 2,000 people were detained for illicit liquor trade and 615 drug smugglers were taken into custody, marking a significant surge in criminal activity, say police officials.
Between January 1 and December 26, the Gurugram police reported a surge in arrests related to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police arrested 378 people in 270 cases under the NDPS Act, with over 1,838 kg of marijuana, 52 kg of charas, 613 grams of heroin, 505 grams of smack, 35 grams of cocaine and 1.64 kg of opium seized, along with thousands of banned capsules and injections. The police said they also 102 gm of MDMA and 300 kg of other banned substances.
The illegal arms trade was also active this year, with police arresting 336 individuals and seizing 204 country-made pistols, 10 revolvers, 299 cartridges and six knives. The crackdown on the illicit sale and supply of alcohol was equally significant, with 2,093 people arrested for involvement in the trade. The police seized over 140,000 bottles of illicit liquor and seized 3,250 litres of raw liquor.
In addition to drugs and weapons, gambling and prostitution operations were on the rise. The police arrested 615 people for gambling-related offences, seizing over Rs 12 lakh in cash. Furthermore, 24 individuals were arrested in prostitution-related cases, with operations often disguised as spa centres. A total of eight cases under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act were registered.
A spokesperson for the Gurugram police stated the department had undertaken effective measures in 2024 to curb criminal activities and enforce local and special laws, successfully apprehending those involved in unlawful acts.
