Surinder Singh Bhoria, a 2014-batch IPS officer, assumed charge as the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rohtak today. The previous SP, Narendra Bijarniya, was transferred after he was named in an FIR lodged by the wife of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Y Puran Kumar, who recently took his own life.

Bhoria was earlier posted as the Commandant of the 5th Battalion at HAP, Madhuban, and SP, Haryana State Narcotics Control Bureau. Prior to that, he held the posts of SP at Yamunanagar, Ambala, and Kurukshetra.

Listing his priorities, Bhoria stated that the major functions of the police were to maintain law and order, prevent crime, and take legal action against criminals. “No one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands,” he said.

“Anyone who acts against the law will face the strictest legal action. The Rohtak police will make tireless efforts to curb crime and solve criminal incidents as quickly as possible. Additionally, appropriate steps will be taken to address traffic problems, illegal sale of drugs, and other illicit trades.”

He added that efforts would also be made to effectively resolve people’s complaints.

Meanwhile, various organisations staged a joint protest demonstration against Bijarniya, while some groups of khap representatives and students extended their support to the outgoing SP. The supporters of Bijarniya, including Ahlawat khap head Jai Singh Ahlawat, student leader Pradeep Deswal, and their followers, maintained that the suicide case of IGP Y Puran Kumar should be thoroughly investigated. However, removing an honest and efficient officer like Bijarniya before any probe was not justified. “A fair investigation should be carried out without any pressure or prejudice,” they said at a meeting held in support of Bijarniya.
