Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Surjewala is leaving no stone unturned in his attempt to regain ground for the party in the Kaithal constituency. The party won the seat for a maximum six times. Randeep and his father Shamsher Singh Surjewala dominated the seat for three consecutive times. Randeep won the seat in 2009 and 2014, while his father secured victory in 2005.
Son might get ticket
Randeep has not formally sought a ticket for the upcoming elections, choosing instead to leave the decision to the party leadership. Meanwhile, sources suggest that if the Congress does not field sitting MPs in the Assembly poll, his son Aditya may be fielded. However, he has not sought a ticket.
Despite his strong connection to the constituency, Randeep lost the seat by a narrow margin of 1,246 votes in 2019.

Surjewala is actively working to strengthen the Congress in Kaithal by holding frequent ‘nukkad’ meetings, encouraging local leaders to join the party, and consolidating support at the grassroots level.
“I am working for the Congress in all four Assembly segments of Kaithal district — Kaithal, Pundri, Guhla and Kalayat. I am also focusing on Jind, Narwana, Julana and other seats in Jind district,” he said.
“I have left the decision of my candidature on party leadership,” he maintained.
During his outreach programme, he has been sharply critical of the BJP, targeting the ruling party on issues like incomplete works, corruption, unemployment and inflation.
The Kaithal Assembly segment has been a battleground for various parties. The Congress has emerged winner in six out of 13 elections held so far. Independent candidates have won the seat twice, while Janata Party, Samata Party, Lokdal, INLD, and BJP have claimed a seat each. In 2019, BJP candidate Leela Ram narrowly defeated Surjewala.
