Dubious distinction: No Haryana city figures in Top 100 in Swachh Survekshan

Haryana has nothing to cheer about in the rankings of the Swachh Survekshan Survey-2023, announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in New Delhi today.
The state has the dubious distinction of not having any of its cities in the Top 100 in the country this year, an embarrassment for the Khattar government in the run-up to the poll. Last year, three Haryana cities had figured among the Top 100 cities.
What went wrong
- Poor feedback from public
- Low level of segregated collection of waste at source
- Erratic certification framework (open defecation free and garbage-free cities)
- Poor processing and disposal of garbage
- Frequent strikes by ‘safaimitras’ across the state
Swachh Survekshan
- In 2022, Rohtak was ranked 38, Karnal 85 & Panchkula 86 in country
Top 5 in state
1. Rohtak/Gohana
2. Karnal/Kalka
3. Beri/Panchkula
4. Gurugram/Nilokheri
5. Jhajjar/Bahadurgarh
Rohtak, which got the first rank in the state, was placed at 109 at the national level, a slip of 71 points as compared to 2022, when it was placed at the 38th slot. The CM’s city Karnal, ranked 85th in 2022, is now at 115, a slip of 30 points.
The modern city of Panchkula, which managed to get the 86th rank last year, is at 139 this year.
A senior government functionary regretted that this was the first time that no city of the state had bagged any slot in the Top 100 cities of the country. “We need to introspect and come out with a concrete strategy to make our cities clean to improve the rankings next year,” he added.
