An official of the municipal council said, under the campaign, teams of the sanitation branch had started conducting raids at shops using and selling single-use plastic items.

“The government has imposed a complete ban on the use of single-use plastic and polythene products. Despite this, shopkeepers continue to use such items. During an inspection on Friday, over 5-kg single-use plastic items were recovered, and 19 challans were issued. The inspection was carried out at the Sector 13 market, old vegetable market, Subhash Mandi, Railway road, old bus stand and the area near Circuit House,” the official added.

District Municipal Commissioner Satinder Siwach said, “A large number of tourists, including devotees, come to Kurukshetra from across the country. The use of single-use plastic products is not allowed, and regular checking will be organised in the city to ensure that such items are not sold or used. All efforts are being made to improve the sanitation conditions and beautification of the city, and appropriate action will be taken against those violating directions.”

During a raid, sanitation branch officials seized polythene items from shops and informed shopkeepers that strict action would be initiated against them if such products were found again.

“It has been observed that street vendors don’t keep dustbins near their carts. They are being motivated to keep dustbins so that waste is not thrown on the sides of roads,” he added.

As part of the drive, drains were being cleaned to prevent waterlogging, the Municipal Commissioner said.

A special one-day cleanliness drive will be organised on Tuesday in which the teams of the municipal council, along with the teams of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran, National Highways Authority of India and Kurukshetra Development Board will participate.
