Thanesar Congress MLA Ashok Arora today claimed that some people with political interests were trying to disturb the atmosphere of the town, even as BJP councillors demanded a written apology from him.

The municipal House meeting was cancelled at the last moment after the councillors and the MLA arrived there. Tight security arrangements were made to avoid any untoward incident, and only authorised people were allowed to enter the meeting hall. Of 32 councillors, 25 belong to the BJP.

Arora said the meeting had been cancelled without prior intimation. Council Chairperson Mafee Dhanda said, “A meeting was scheduled to be held today, but the executive officer and the secretary were not available, following which it was cancelled. The next meeting will be called soon.”

Arora, who was recently involved in a scuffle with the husband of a BJP councillor during a Municipal House meeting, said, “Some people are trying to disturb the atmosphere in the city by forcing different communities and groups to burn effigies. Women councillors are being forced to oppose me, though I have never made any statement against them.”

In an indirect attack on local BJP leaders, he said, “Some people, for their political interests, are using the councillors. As a local MLA, I will give my full support to them. If the councillors pass a resolution to get an inquiry into all scams that have taken place in the past 10 years done from a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, I will stop attending the meeting of the House.”

“I have only exposed corrupt practices in the municipal council, and asked for the implementation of directions of the Urban Local Bodies Department that the relatives of elected women councillors shouldn’t be allowed to attend the meeting. The councillors of the ruling party and the Opposition must work together for the development of the city,” he said, adding that, “I have no personal agenda and no conflict with women councillors. No action has been taken on the complaint regarding the incident that happened in the last meeting. I have already apprised the party about the situation and the decision will be taken by the party.”

Meanwhile, the BJP councillors have asked the MLA to apologise, alleging that the MLA used abusive language in the presence of women councillors, which was unacceptable.
