IMMINENT HURDLE

At present, there are nearly 125 shops. We held a meeting with shop owners and they have not raised any objection so far, but the issue will come about in bringing the shops in symmetry.

Ishwar Verma, municipal engineer

As per information, the proposal has come about as part of the council’s beautification project. Pillars will be erected in front of shops and murals, glasses and running boards will be put up on it to give a similar look to the entire stretch. There are nearly 125 shops along the 850-foot-long stretch and the MC has a plan to bring the shops in symmetry for the corridor project. The estimated cost of the project is yet to be calculated.

Municipal Engineer Ishwar Verma said, “Lakhs of pilgrims and tourists come to Kurukshetra during the International Gita Mahotsav on the occasion of solar eclipse and visit religious sites there every year. A stretch of over 850-feet (from railway station to Parshuram chowk) on the railway road is under the Municipal Council and we have decided to construct a corridor on it on the pattern of Golden Temple Heritage Street, Amritsar. Also, we intend to erect pillars and construct a ‘verandah’ in front of shops. However, there is no plan to erect statues, as it’s one of the busiest roads in Thanesar.”

As per information, the corridor will be proposed in the second phase of the beautification project, however, encroachments will be a major issue that the council will have to face.

Meanwhile, the council has allotted the work under the first phase of beautification project at a cost of Rs92 lakh.

Municipal Engineer said: “The work under the first phase of the beautification project has been allotted. Under the first phase, drains have already been constructed. Now, dividers will be constructed. The work is likely to be completed within four months and once the work is completed, the corridor project will be proposed in the second phase.”
