Kurukshetra, July 23
The Thanesar Municipal Council is planning to establish a convention centre in Kurukshetra for holding cultural events and programmes, besides generating revenue.
The Municipal Council will take land from Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) in Sector-4 for this purpose.
An official of the Municipal Council said, “Currently, the events are organised at the auditorium of Kurukshetra University and Kala Parishad in Kurukshetra. While the auditorium of the university remains booked due to its own events, there is a shortage of space at the Kala Parishad’s auditorium due to which the authorities decided to build MC’s own convention centre having facilities of an auditorium, meeting hall and space for other activities.”
District Municipal Commissioner Vaishali Sharma said, “There was a need to build an auditorium in the city to organise cultural programmes, outreach activities, meetings and other government programmes. A land of the HSVP has been identified in Sector 4 for the project. The HSVP will transfer the land and the Municipal Council will get the building constructed. The budget of the project is yet to be finalised. We will try to build the auditorium having a capacity of at least 1,500 people.”
“There will be a provision of a big hall for wedding parties, receptions and other programmes. Residents will be able to hire the venue for their events. It will not only help residents in getting a good venue in the middle of the city but also help the Municipal Council in generating revenue. It has also been decided that a private firm will be engaged to manage and run the venue, but the firm has to keep it reserved for government events,” she added.
Minister of State for Urban Local Bodies and Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha said, “An auditorium with a capacity of 1,500 persons and a meeting room with a capacity of 100 persons will be established in the convention centre, for which a budget will be provided by the state government. A 3.50-acre land of the HSVP has been identified and further process has been initiated. It will be a good project not only for the Municipal Council but also for residents and organisations as they will also be able to use the venue for their events. All efforts are being made to start the project at the earliest.”
