To improve traffic management at Pipli Chowk and new bus stand, a budget of Rs 70 lakh will be spent by the Municipal Council on the new traffic lights system in Thanesar City.
As per information, sensor-based traffic lights will be installed to ensure smooth flow of traffic. The problem of defunct traffic lights system was raised in these columns last month. The lights at Pipli, new bus stand and Umri Chowk have been lying defunct for last several years. In the absence of a functional system, traffic snarls have become a common sight during busy hours. The city also witnesses heavy traffic jams during the International Gita Mahotsav and other festivals.
An official said, “The traffic lights have remained non-functional for a long time now and it has been a point of discussion in the road safety meetings as well. The number of vehicles are on the rise in the city and the tourist influx is also increasing. Since the local MLA Subhash Sudha is also the Minister of State for the Urban Local Bodies, we are hopeful that the project will get all the required approvals soon and the budget will also be released.”
Executive Engineer of Thanesar MC Surender Kumar said: “New traffic lights will be installed at Pipli Chowk and new bus stand. Besides the lights, blinkers will also be installed in the city area and the cost of the project is around Rs 70 lakh.”
Meanwhile, District Municipal Commissioner Vaishali Sharma, said: “To resolve the problem of traffic congestion in the city, a committee — including the traffic police — was formed to identify the locations for installation of traffic lights and provide suggestions. New sensor-based traffic lights will be installed soon, for which a file has been sent to the higher authorities for administrative approval. The approval is likely to be received in a week and then the work will be initiated. After successful implementation of the traffic system at identified locations, more areas will be covered to ensure smooth traffic flow in the city.”
