Three held for stealing wires from fields, 40 cases solved

In a major breakthrough, the Special Detective Unit (SDU) of Kaithal police has arrested three persons allegedly involved in stealing submersible cables from agricultural fields. With the arrests, the police claim to have solved nearly 40 cases of wire theft reported from different parts of the district.

According to the police spokesperson, the arrests followed a complaint lodged by Nakul, a resident of Keorak village, who reported that on August 28 he found the lock on his field’s shed broken and about 70 ft of cable missing from his submersible motor. Similar thefts were reported the same night from the nearby farms of Jaibhagwan, Narender and Sanjay, where wires of their tube wells had also been cut and stolen.

On the basis of Nakul’s complaint, a case was registered at Sadar Police Station and the investigation was handed over to the SDU under the supervision of Sub-Inspector Ramesh Chand and his team, led by Sub-Inspector Dharam Singh.

Following intensive investigation and field surveillance, the team apprehended the three accused — Vikram, a resident of Subhash Nagar, Kaithal, Shoaib Khan and Bunty, both residents of Pantnagar, Kaithal. During interrogation, all confessed to their involvement in multiple incidents of wire theft across rural areas of the district. Shoaib Khan was arrested on 4 October and remanded in police custody for four days; Bunty and Vikram were arrested on 6 October. Vikram has been sent to judicial custody, while Bunty is on two days’ police remand, the spokesperson said.

The accused allegedly targeted isolated tubewells at night, stealing long stretches of cable connected to submersible pumps. They are said to have sold the copper extracted from the wires to local scrap dealers for quick cash.

“With the arrest of these three persons, nearly 40 cases of wire theft in Kaithal district have been successfully solved. This is a major achievement for the Special Detective Unit, as farmers had been facing repeated thefts in recent months,” the spokesperson added.
