Yamunanagar, August 4
Both timber markets (lakkar mandis) of Yamunanagar district have become functional again after ‘kanwar yatra’ ended on August 2.
With the opening of the timber markets, the farmers will be able to supply their poplar wood to plywood factories of the district through timber arhtiyas, who conduct their business from the two markets. The timber markets, situated in Manakpur in Jagadhri and Mandauli in Yamunanagar were closed after the ‘kanwar yatra’ started on July 22.
Yamunanagar district is themain route for the kanwariyas coming from parts of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to go to Haridwar. They bring holy water of River Ganga to offer it to lord Shiva in the temples of their villages on Mahashivratri. “Both timber markets opened on Saturday and some farmers came to the markets with their produce — poplar wood, eucalyptus wood and other wood. We are expecting an increase in the arrival of wood, mainly poplar, from Monday,” said Vijay Kumar, a timber arhtiya.
Anil Kumar Garg, a senior member of Haryana Plywood Manufacturers Association, said stocks of wood were being used to run the factories when the ‘kanwar yatra’ was on, but the stock had almost dried in all factories.
He said the plywood factories were facing shortage of wood fuel (factories get fuel from waste of wood) as most of the peeling factories, saw mills and chipper factories remained non-functional due to the non-supply of poplar and other woods during this period. He added that peeling factories, saw mills and chipper factories were the major suppliers of wood fuel to the plywood factories.
“Plywood factories are not getting poplar and other wood in required quantity. Now, we hope there is an improvement in the supply,” said Anil Kumar Garg. Farmer Joginder Singh of Devdhar village said now, the timber markets had opened and the farmers would be able to supply poplar wood.
Yamunanagar district is considered to be the hub of poplar wood in Haryana.
