Rewari, February 14

Taking a serious note of the accumulation of liquid waste near Dharuhera town in Rewari district, Rajasthan’s Chief Secretary Sudhansh Pant has directed its Bhiwadi Municipal Council (MC) to explore the possibility of setting up of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at different places to treat liquid waste to reuse it for various purposes.

He said drainage of the contaminated water from industrial units should be ensured in the Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) conduit line and other outlets should be closed.

He also directed the MC to complete ongoing work of laying sewer lines and domestic connections in the industrial area at the earliest.

Bone of contention between the two states

  • The release of liquid waste by the industries of Bhiwadi town of Rajasthan towards Dharuhera of Rewari district in Haryana has been a bone of contention between the two states for a long time
  • The water not only inundates the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48) but also accumulates in residential colonies of Dharuhera
  • Rajasthan CS has now directed Bhiwadi MC to resolve the issue
  • Bhiwadi, an industrial town in Alwar (Rajasthan), is adjoining Dharuhera town of Rewari district

The directions were issued after a review meeting, chaired by the Chief Secretary, was held yesterday to find a permanent issue of the waterlogging issue near Dharuhera on the Delhi-Jaipur Highway (NH-48).

Bhiwadi, an industrial town in Alwar district (Rajasthan), is adjoining Dharuhera town of Rewari. At the meeting, Hanuman Mal Dhaka, District Collector, Khairthal-Tijara, said due to the natural slope towards Haryana, water flows towards Dharuhera.

“To solve the problem, it will be appropriate to install STPs of different capacities in the Bhiwadi area, so that the treated water can be used locally,” he added.

Notably, the release of liquid waste by the industries of Bhiwadi town towards Dharuhera has been a bone of contention between two states for a long time as the water not only inundates the highway but also accumulates in residential colonies. The situation deteriorates in the monsoon season. The contaminated water also causes a health hazard for the residents.

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had, in July last year, visited Dharuhera to inspect the situation. Later, he also held a joint meeting of senior officers of both the states, wherein some vital decisions were taken in the direction of resolving the issue. It was decided to establish a closed conduit in Bhiwadi town (Rajasthan) to take industrial waste to the CETP. Thereafter, the dirty water was to be treated and used further.

Meanwhile, Prakash Yadav, a local resident, said such directions had been issued many times but the issue was still lying unaddressed. “Sincere efforts from both sides are needed to resolve the issue permanently,” Yadav added.
