ACP (Traffic) Surendra Kaur informed the traffic policemen about issuing challans by installing body cameras on Friday. A copy of the standard operating procedure (SOP) issued by the police officers was also shared with officials at the police Traffic Tower.

The ACP said all traffic inspectors and zonal officers were given instructions to use the cameras. By using these during challan, the activities of the vehicle’s driver and the intersection will also be recorded. All these recordings made will be kept safely, so that if needed in future, help can be taken from these camera recordings.

DCP (Traffic) Virendra Vij said body cameras had been given to every traffic inspector and zonal officer. They would have to be operated regularly on a daily basis, he said. This will provide information about the activities taking place in their chowk and areas as well as the behaviour of the policemen.

“The traffic personnel have also been given training for this. The cameras will turn on as soon as duty begins. The challan officer’s camera will remain on during duty. Apart from this, the location of challan officers can be seen. Many a time during the challan process, the driver is abused. These can also be verified,” said DCP Vij.

A senior traffic police officer said the cameras would be worn over the uniforms. Conversations and other activities between police and people can be captured through cameras. In a way, it works like a CCTV camera. It also has a memory card for storage. The video quality will also be better in these cameras. The quality of the camera will be such that everything that happens between the police and the people will be heard and seen clearly.
