Already reeling from a downturn in export business over the past three years, the announcement by United States (US) President Donald Trump of a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods has further heightened tensions in Panipat — the city internationally renowned as India’s ‘Textile City’. Exports were already impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war, inflation across European and South American markets, rising freight charges and increasing delivery timelines. Now, the imposition of a 50 per cent tariff on goods from India is expected to deal a severe blow to Panipat’s export industry.
