In a bid to improve its ranking in Swachh Survey 2024, the Municipal Corporation, Yamunanagar-Jagadhri (MCYJ) has decided to eliminate all garbage points across the twin cities. The move aims to prevent people from dumping waste in open areas and promote cleanliness.

After removing these garbage points, the MCYJ plans to beautify the areas by installing pots and benches. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Municipal Commissioner Ayush Sinha on Wednesday, where strategies to enhance cleanliness efforts were discussed.

To ensure people do not litter at the previously used dumping spots, the MCYJ will install awareness banners and wall paintings promoting cleanliness. Additionally, separate dustbins for dry and wet waste will be placed in commercial areas to encourage proper waste disposal.

During the meeting, Municipal Commissioner Ayush Sinha urged officers to enhance their efforts in their respective areas to secure a higher ranking in Swachh Survey 2024. “This time, the theme of the Swachh Survey is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle of garbage,” he stated.

Sinha emphasised that work must be carried out to maximise the 12,500 marks allotted in the Swachh Survey. He highlighted the criteria on which the rankings would be based, including cleanliness and waste collection practices, proper disposal and solid waste management, public awareness and citizen feedback, used water management and mechanised sewage disposal and condition of public drainage systems.

He also directed the engineering branch to ensure the immediate removal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste wherever found.

“I have asked the officials of the MCYJ to impose fines on individuals who throw garbage in the open,” said Ayush Sinha.

The municipal commissioner also issued instructions to intensify road sweeping, night sweeping and door-to-door garbage collection. He stressed the need for improved maintenance of public toilets and directed that door-to-door garbage collection vehicles must carry separate bags for biomedical and electronic waste.

The meeting was attended by Additional Municipal Commissioner Dr Vijay Pal Yadav and other senior officials.
