Two arrested for defrauding woman of Rs 26L in fake DU job scam
Two individuals have been accused of defrauding a woman of Rs 26 lakh under the guise of securing her a job as an assistant professor at Delhi University (DU). When the woman’s family demanded their money back, the accused allegedly threatened to kill her brother. The police said an FIR has been registered at Udyog Vihar police station.
The complainant, Ankur Rao, said his sister, Pooja Yadav, had applied for the position of assistant professor at DU in 2023; however, she did not clear the interview held on October 7. The complainant said on October 15, Omkar Yadav, approached Ankur, claiming to have connections with high-ranking DU officials. Yadav promised to help Pooja secure the job. He introduced Ankur to Sandeep Kumar, who demanded Rs 35 lakh for the job placement, though the final amount was settled at Rs 32 lakh.
Ankur transferred Rs 15 lakh, with an agreement to pay the remaining Rs 5 lakh upon receiving the interview email. Pooja received an email from the official DU address, stating her interview was scheduled for January 10, 2024. However, in the first week of January, Sandeep informed Ankur the interview had been postponed.
On January 29, Pooja received an email confirming her appointment as assistant professor. She was then called to verify her documents on February 19. However, when she attempted to complete the verification process, the accused informed her the verification had been delayed. On March 23, another email instructed Pooja to present her documents on April 4. When she arrived at DU with her brother, they discovered there was no such programme scheduled.
The family approached the police. The case was investigated by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), which found the allegations to be true. An FIR was registered against Omkar Yadav and Sandeep Kumar under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC at the Udyog Vihar police station on Wednesday. A senior police officer stated the investigation is ongoing and the accused would be arrested soon.
