A two-and-a-half year old boy and his 18-month old sister, suspected to be suffering from monkeypox, have been admitted to Mukand Lal District Civil Hospital in Yamunanagar. They have been kept in isolation ward, set up for monkeypox patients in the Trauma Centre.

“These are suspected cases of monkeypox. We have taken samples, which have been sent to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi for confirmation,” said Dr Manjeet Singh, Civil Surgeon of Yamunanagar district.

He, however, said that the disease could be confirmed only after getting the results of the samples.

The Civil Surgeon said that they got information about the children with monkeypox symptoms on Friday evening. “We immediately sent an ambulance to rush the children to the isolation ward, where they are receiving treatment,” said Dr Manjeet Singh.

He said that the samples were taken on Saturday and sent to AIIMS, Delhi, for confirmation of the disease.

He further said the children were suffering from fever for the past several days and getting treatment from private doctors. “The children reported symptoms such as fever for the past several days along with skin lesions,” said Dr Manjeet Singh.

He added that the family of the children had no travel history.

He further said that a 5-bed isolation ward had been set up here for monkeypox patients.

On the other hand, some schools in the district have started sending messages to parents advising them to take precautionary measures.

“Children suffering with symptoms of runny nose, fever, mouth ulcer, pain at throat, blisters or red spots at hand and foot should not be sent to school till the symptoms subside,” reads a message sent by a school to the parents of their wards.
