Batting for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across the country, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini today said it would be implemented in Haryana at an ‘appropriate time’.
“The whole country is serious about it (the UCC). Intellectuals are serious over this issue. When all are serious, discussions are taking place on it,” Saini said during the course of a press conference organised on the occasion of the completion of 100 days of the BJP government’s third term in the state.
"When the time comes, we will implement it,” Saini responded to a pointed question whether the BJP government could also follow in the footsteps of its Uttarakhand counterpart in the implementation of the UCC.
Uttarakhand on Monday became the first state in the country to implement the UCC with the ruling BJP fulfilling a major commitment made ahead of the 2022 Assembly polls.
Saying that Uttarakhand had done a “good thing” in implementing the UCC, Saini only said the country wanted the UCC without giving a categorical commitment or time frame for its roll out in Haryana. While the implementation of the UCC was the part of the ‘sankalp patra’ of the saffron party ahead of parliamentary elections, surprisingly it was not part of its election manifesto for last year’s assembly polls in Haryana.
