Two main roads, from Eight Marla Chowk on Jatal Road to Easy Day Chowk at a cost of Rs 1.90 crore, and from the Aneja Petrol pump to Guru Teg Bahadur Colony at the cost of Rs 1.60 crore, were widened just before the Assembly polls.

Panipat City MLA Pramod Vij made a proposal for the widening of eight more roads, the main circle road, including the connected link roads from main circle road to the Gas Godown road, the main entry road from Ram Lal chowk, Assandh road to Township club, from Pruthi Chowk to Guru Teg Bahadur Colony, from Ram Sharnam Chowk to Outer Ring Road crossing Ram Lal Chowk to Outer Ring Road, Assandh road flyover to Gautam Nagar (Idgah road), from Nikitasha store to Guru Ramdas Sabha Road.

In the proposal sent to the UHBVN from the engineering wing of the MC, it was mentioned that 80 per cent residential houses on the circle road had been converted into commercial showrooms and scores of multi-brand showrooms had been opened on this road. Due to this, a big problem of vehicular parking has occurred, especially during the evening and school hours and traffic jams could be seen on this road in routine. Apart from thist, a big school is located on the main road of Model Town.

The UHBVN has prepared a detailed project report for the shifting of the power supply systems. As per sources, a total of 300 electricity poles and around 35 transformers would be shifted, while power cables would also be changed under the project. After that, the line losses would also be reduced in the area.

Mohit Bajaj, president, Ring Road Welfare Association, said maximum roads in Model Town had got commercialised and people had converted their residential buildings into commercial ones and several multi brands had been opened here.

Due to this, the vehicular movement on these roads had been affected and parking problems had been increasing day by day, he said. The widening of the roads is a good initiative and after these roads get broad, not only the commuters would be benefited but the business would increase, Bajaj maintained.

Pramod Vij, MLA, Panipat City, said after getting approval from the UHBVN headquarters, the MC would float tenders for the widening of all eight internal roads.

The work on the project would begin soon, the MLA said. Dharam Suhag, SE, UHBVN, said the proposal for the shifting of all electrical poles and wires had been prepared and sent to the headquarters for approval. All roads of Model Town would be renovated and approximately Rs 6 to 8 crore was the estimated cost of the project and the approval would most likely be received within 10 days, Suhag maintained.
