Rohtak, September 24

Dr Joginder Singh, a former chairperson of OPJS University located at Churu in Rajasthan who has been arrested in connection with the post-matric scholarship scam in Haryana, has told a local court that he had been implicated in the case due to an old sporting rivalry with the head of the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case.

The counsel for the petitioner, Piyush Gakhar, who had applied for grant of bail to Joginder Singh before the court of Rohtak Additional Sessions Judge Ritu YK Behl, maintained that the petitioner had been a boxer of international repute and had often defeated the SIT head (who has also been a boxer). That was a reason for his “false” implication.

The judge granted bail to the petitioner observing that the matter was being investigated for more than a year but was nowhere near completion. She stated that the petitioner was in judicial custody for two months and no useful purpose would be served by detaining him in custody any further.

On the other hand, Manbir Singh, SP, State Vigilance Bureau (SVB), who is also the head of the SIT, asserted that he had been a boxer, but he never had any bout with Joginder, the accused in the said case.
