Vidhan Sabha panel visits tech varsity, students cite lack of basic facilities

As many as 700 students of Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University for Science and Technology (DCRUST) on Friday submitted a memorandum related to the issues faced by them to the Health and Education Subject Committee of Haryana Vidhan Sabha.

Members of the committee, led by chairman Ram Kumar Kashyap, held a detailed discussion with the university administration, officials concerned and with the students.

The panel reviewed various courses being run in the university and facilities offered to the students. The committee members took a serious note over the quality of education, hostels, library, laboratories, sports facilities and other academic activities keeping in view the interests of the students.

The committee directed the university administration to strengthen the facilities provided to the students on priority.

Kashyap said to encourage research-based work in the university, students should be experimenting with latest technologies.

The committee directed the Vice-Chancellor to form a sub-committee to promote the environment on the campus.

Vice-Chancellor Shree Prakash Singh said road repair works in the university would start in the next 15 days.

The chairman said whatever anomalies come to the fore, should be addressed in the next two months. If any deficiency is found, action would be taken against officials concerned.

Students raise issues before the committee

The students highlighted problems faced by them, including lack of potable water, unhygienic toilets, broken fans, non-operational air conditioners in laboratories, defunct computers, shortage of chemicals, poor internet connectivity, zero approach to online database, long and unscheduled power cuts in departments, library and hostels.

Other issues included repair of hostels, cleaning of water tanks, entry of unauthorised vehicles, safety of girl students, lack of sports facilities, continuous delay in declaration of results and non-availability of ambulance. The students also demanded that CCTV cameras should be installed in the women’s hostel and main spots of the university.

The committee members, including MLAs Induraj Narwal, Randhir Panihar, Harinder Singh, Balram Dangi, Devender Hans, Shishpal Singh, Additional Secretary Vidhan Sabha Naren Dutt, Prabhjot Singh, Director Technical Education, Vice-Chancellor Shree Prakash Singh and SDM Subhash Chander were present.
