Expressing concern over the increasing traffic on the Ambala-Chandigarh route, Cabinet Minister Anil Vij
has raised the demand for a Metro line between Ambala and Chandigarh. Vij requested Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to introduce the Metro during the latter’s visit to Ambala Cantonment on Holi.
Vij praised Khattar for his support in the development of Ambala Cantonment during his term as Haryana Chief Minister. He said Khattar approved several major projects, the domestic airport project being one of them.
Acquiring land from the Army for the airport was very challenging due to the high cost. The army had sought Rs 130 crore, which was much higher than the market value. However, Khattar immediately allocated the funds for the airport without hesitation, Vij said.
Speaking to The Tribune, Vij said: “A large number of people travel between Ambala and Chandigarh on a daily basis. But due to traffic congestion, people spend hours in travelling. The Metro between Ambala and Chandigarh has been a long pending demand and I have requested Manohar Lal Khattar to introduce a Metro route from Ambala. Pillars can be easily erected on this stretch and it would come as a big respite for the people of this region.”
“He (Khattar) had approved several major projects of Ambala. I have raised the demand with the Union Minister, I will keep persuading him. I am hopeful that soon the project will be announced. The domestic airport is ready and soon the operations will begin. There will be flights for Jammu, Ayodhya, Srinagar and Lucknow from Ambala. We have been told that several airline companies have been approaching the aviation department with queries and applications regarding the domestic airport of Ambala Cantonment”, he added.
The Cabinet Minister said: “As a major and important junction, Ambala Cantonment will gain considerable advantages from the establishment of a domestic airport. The regional development and employment opportunities will also see a boost. All these development works will be beneficial for the people of Ambala as well as the neighbouring districts.”
