Water level surges in Yamuna, Som rivers in Yamunanagar district

Water level surged in the Yamuna and Som river of the Yamunanagar district on Friday due to heavy rain in neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The water level in the Yamuna increased to 90,926 cusecs, on Friday.

According to information, the water level of the Yamuna was recorded at 73,385 cusecs at the Hathnikund barrage at 12 noon, but it reached to 90,926 cusecs at 5 pm.

As per the authorities of the local administration, a flood-like situation is normally announced when the water level touches the 2.5 lakh cusecs mark at the barrage.

Huge water flow was reported in seasonal rivulet Som Nadi (river) also.

According to information, after surge of water in this seasonal rivulet, the water entered agricultural fields affecting the paddy and sugarcane crops and green fodder grown for domestic animals by the farmers at Dhanaura, Basatiyan Wala, Rukal, Khanuwala, Chintpur and some other villages.

The farmers said the river water had affected their paddy and sugarcane crops, but the green fodder grown for domestic animals was on the verge of getting fully spoiled.

The farmers have demanded crop damage compensation from the state government by getting the Girdawari done immediately.

The district administration has set up a flood control room at the Mini-Secretariat, at district level and other control rooms at the sub-divisions level.

Bilaspur SDM Jaspal Singh Gill said water was reported in Som river on Friday, but no report of damage was reported from anywhere.
