A 32-year-old youth was shot dead while a Haryana Police constable sustained bullet injuries during a wedding function in Garhi Ujalekhan village, Gohana, Sonepat district. The incident took place late Thursday evening, sending shockwaves through the area. The Sonepat police acted swiftly and arrested two main accused within hours of the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Jaideep, a resident of Garhi Sisana, while the injured has been identified as Ajeeb of Garhi Ujalekhan, who has been serving as a Haryana Police constable for the past 14 months.

According to the complaint filed by Anuj Lathwal, elder brother of the injured constable Ajeeb, the incident stemmed from an old enmity.

Anuj, who runs an insurance office at Fountain Chowk in Gohana, stated that his friend Dr Pawan owned a nursing home nearby. Around four to five months ago, Dr Pawan had a dispute with Sunil Khasa of Baroda and Narender alias Nadru of Vishnu Nagar, Gohana. Anuj had supported Dr Pawan in the matter, which had seemingly been resolved, but the accused harboured resentment and enmity.

On Thursday evening, Ajeeb’s wedding celebrations were underway and Dr Pawan was among the invitees. Around 10 pm, Sunil Khasa, Narender alias Nadru, Patwari of Gamri village, and 3-4 other men arrived at the venue in two vehicles.

“They attacked me and Dr Pawan without any provocation. When my brother Ajeeb, my cousin Jaideep and Rohit tried to intervene, they were assaulted as well. One of them pulled out a pistol and fired at us,” Anuj alleged.

Jaideep sustained a fatal bullet wound in his chest while Ajeeb was shot in the left hand. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Both injured were rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to Bhagat Phool Singh Medical College in Khanpur Kalan where doctors declared Jaideep dead.

Following the complaint, police teams reached the spot and launched an intensive investigation.

DCP Crime Narender Kadyan confirmed that a crime unit, under ACP Gohana Rishikant, arrested two accused — Sunil of Baroda and Devender of Gamri village. “The accused will be produced in court soon,” he added.

Meanwhile, police are continuing their efforts to track down the remaining accused involved in the deadly shooting.
