Encroachments shrink Karnal roads

Karnal’s once-spacious roads in planned sectors are now chaotic due to rampant encroachments. Homeowners extend properties onto public spaces, shrinking road widths and eliminating green belts and footpaths. Increase in vehicles and lack of parking spaces worsen congestion on roads, ultimately posing a safety threat for commuters. Pedestrians on busy streets face a heightened risk of accident. Encroachment battles among residents and inadequate enforcement by authorities, including the Nagar Nigam and HSVP, have exacerbated the crisis. Residents demand strict penalties, inspections and restoration efforts to reclaim public spaces and preserve Karnal’s planned-city charm before it’s lost to this dangerous trend. —Col PS Bindra (Retd), Karnal
