Will sever ties with those selling, using drugs: Nath community
A significant mahapanchayat of the Nath community was held in Ward 1 of Rania town recently to address the increasing drug menace in the region.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the community from 35 villages around Rania. During the panchayat, the community unanimously decided that if any member was caught consuming or selling drugs, the entire community will sever all ties with them. Such persons would be socially ostracised.
Nath community district president Naseeb Nath said, recently, a CIA Police team from Sirsa arrested two young men from the Nath community in Rania for possessing a large quantity of drugs. This incident had brought shame to the entire community, he added.
He claimed that the community had never been involved with drugs, and that it would not allow any youngster to fall into the trap of drug addiction.
In the meeting, community members from all 35 villages decided to cut ties with the families of the two arrested youths, barring them from participating in any social, religious or family functions.
Members said the community believed that such strict actions would keep the youth away from drugs, and protect the community’s reputation.
Councillor Mahavir Nath added that if anyone from the community was caught using or selling drugs, he would first try to counsel them.
If they don’t change, he would sever ties with them and their family, reporting them to the police for necessary punishment. He also appealed to all members of the community to stand against drugs, and called on the district administration and the state government to take strict action against drug dealers and users.
