With 53.4% turnout, voting largely peaceful in Rohtak
Polling for the Rohtak Municipal Corporation and Kalanaur Municipal Committee elections concluded peacefully on Sunday, with district administration authorities adopting strict security measures at polling booths for the smooth conduct of the voting process.
In the Rohtak Municipal Corporation, 53.4 per cent voters exercised their franchise —170,402 out of the total 319,209.
The Kalanaur Municipal Committee saw an even higher voter turnout, with 78.2 per cent of the electorate — 13,727 out of 17,547 voters — participating in the elections.
The polling process remained largely peaceful throughout the day, despite minor skirmishes and technical issues with the electronic voting machines (EVMs) at certain locations.
Authorities swiftly addressed the issues, ensuring that voting proceeded without significant disruption. In total, 285 polling booths were set up in Rohtak, while 16 booths were set up in Kalanaur.
Though five candidates were in fray for the position of Mayor of Rohtak Municipal Corporation, it seems to be a direct contest between the BJP’s Ram Avtar Valmiki and Congress’s Surajmal Kiloi. The post is reserved for candidates from the Schedule Caste (SC) community.
Both parties have also contested the election on their symbols for the posts of councillors.
