In a heinous crime, a 35-year-old woman, who was a rag-picker, was allegedly gangraped, and her five-year-old daughter was strangled to death by four assailants, include three minors, in Jind district.
The police said the incident occurred on the night of April 21-22 when the accused picked up the woman who was asleep in a jhuggi in a locality in Jind town and took her away at some distance. The accused reportedly gangraped her.
The woman told the police that she was asleep with her daughter, and the accused picked up her daughter, too. The body of the child was found lying on a cot adjoining the jhuggi the next morning with strangulation marks. Later, the body was buried, but was exhumed after the matter was brought to the notice of the police yesterday.
Police sources said the body had been sent to the PGIMS at Khanpur Kalan in Sonepat district for post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the condition of the woman is stable. The police said the accused included Amit (35) and three minor boys. An FIR had been registered.
