Karnal: World Glaucoma Week was organised at Shri Ram Chand Memorial Hospital. Dr Noopur Taneja Charaya, phaco eye surgeon, made patients aware about glaucoma and screened glaucoma during a week-long programme at the hospital. She said that glaucoma was the second-most leading cause of blindness in the world. It affects the optic nerve which is a vital link between the eye and brain. “Glaucoma is a silent thief of sight and it is dangerous. It is estimated that up to 40 per cent of the sufferer’s vision can disappear without them noticing it,” she said. She added that there are two types of glaucoma -– open and closed angle. Acute eye pain, nausea, decreased or blurry vision, headache, redness of eye and coloured haloes are common symptoms.
Industrialist on anti-plastic drive
Karnal: Continuing his anti-plastic drive, Taraori-based industrialist Anil Gupta donated 100 sets of steel utensils at Government High School, Ramana, for midday meal. Earlier, he had donated 400 sets in a gurdwara in Ambala Cantt, 700 sets at different religious places in Bilaspur and 200 sets at various religious places at Kaithal district to stop the practice of using single-use plastic. In this initiative, NRI Aastha Gupta from Australia made a significant contribution. Gupta said that he, with the contribution of his near and dear ones, has donated 3,700 sets of steel utensils to stop the use of single-use plastic in various schools, hospitals and religious places. He said that he would continue to make the people aware not to use single-use plastic.
Women achievers honoured
Kaithal: Women have proved their mettle and shown exemplary courage in every field and brought glory to the nation in many fields. This was stated by Kaithal MLA Leela Ram while speaking as chief guest in a district-level function held in RKSD College here recently. Leela Ram said that women had worked hard, made sacrifices and did not lag behind their male counterparts in bringing glory to the nation. He said that the Centre under the leadership of Modi and Haryana Government under the guidance of Khattar had launched various schemes for the welfare of women. Many women achievers, who had shown exemplary dedication and devotion to duty, were honoured by the MLA at the function.
NGT chief inspects garbage sites
Sonepat: While reviewing the implementation of the directives of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in a meeting at Sonepat recently, NGT Chairman Justice Pritam Pal said that it was the responsibility of the National Highway Authority of India to maintain cleanliness on national highways. He also pointed that action could be taken against those institutes, industrial units or establishments polluting rivers and canals. He also inspected the garbage management sites, under-construction mechanical compost plant in Sector 23 and had discussions on the suggestion of DC Sonepat, Anshaj Singh, for bringing more housing colonies under the jurisdiction of Sonepat Municipal Corporation.
Mountaineer makes record
Rewari: Mountaineer Narendra Singh has registered an entry in the Limca Book of Records for reaching the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in South Africa in 17 hours and coming down in nine hours, seven minutes.
A resident of Nehrugarh of Kosli sub-division, Narendra had scaled Mount Everest at the age of 20 in 2016.
“I have already scaled Mt Everest, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus and peaks of 10 mountains of Australia.
My goal is to scale peaks in seven continents,” said Narendra.
240 masks distributed
Bhiwani: A social organisation distributed masks for protection against Covid in Bhiwani on Sunday. Ashok Kumar Bhardwaj, national youth awardee who is associated with the NGO, said that they have distributed 240 masks during the campaign which is mainly aimed at spreading awareness about hygiene. He said that they had urged the people to maintain cleanliness, wash hands with soap and use hand sanitiser to prevent spread of the virus.
