Rohtak, July 5

“Gross negligence” on the part of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) came to the fore when students of the final semester of Bachelor of Arts (BA) enrolled in self-financing, government-aided and government colleges got the question paper of another subject on Tuesday.

This happened at the exam centres set up not only in Rohtak but also four other districts — Jhajjar, Sonepat, Faridabad and Palwal — where several thousand students came to take the exam of Hindi (Compulsory) this morning.

Acting on the complaint, the MDU authorities cancelled the exam and announced to reschedule it soon. Sources said the paper given was of Hindi (Honours) in place of Hindi (Compulsory). The exam of Hindi (Honours) was conducted on July 2 but it is yet to be confirmed whether the paper was the same or not.

“Around 900 students appeared in the exam at our centre when the paper was distributed among them in the morning. The examinees — after going through the paper — complained that it was not their paper as the questions asked in it are not in their syllabus. We immediately contacted the MDU authorities. They allowed us to take back the paper from the examinees,” said Dr Mahesh Khyaliya, Principal, All-India Jat Heroes Memorial College, Rohtak.

A faculty member of Pt JL Nehru Post-Graduate College, Jhajjar, informed that only two questions having 40 marks each were asked in the paper which clearly indicated that the paper was out of syllabus. On getting information about cancellation of the exam, they asked the students to go home without attempting the paper. Students faced the same situation in other colleges of the district as well, he added.

Dr Dinesh Saharan, Principal, Pt Neki Ram Sharma College, Rohtak, said Hindi (Compulsory) was mentioned on the envelopes of the question papers sent by the MDU to his centre. “But actually, the papers of Hindi (Honours) were found inside when the envelopes were opened. The exam of Hindi (Honours) had already been conducted on July 2,” he claimed.

Dr BS Sindhu, Controller of Examination, MDU, said the paper was out of syllabus. Hence, it had been cancelled. “The exact reason for it will be ascertained after examining the issue. The next date of exam will be notified in one or two days,” he added.
