The Yamunanagar-Jagadhri Municipal Corporation (MC) on Thursday organised a cleanliness drive at Shaheed Naveen Vaidya Government Senior Secondary School in Yamunanagar.

A slogan and speech competition and an awareness programme were organised as part of the event.

The event was part of a slew of activities that the MC has been carrying out to get a good ranking in Swachh Survekshan.

Chief Sanitation Inspector (CSI) Sunil Dutt, Swachh Bharat Mission activity expert Pooja and NGO Ek Soch Nayi Soch founder Shashi Gupta addressed the students during the event.

Students who participated in the competitions were honoured with certificates.

Dutt said, under Swachh Survekshan-2024, higher the marks (out of 12,500) the MC got, the better it would rank.

The ranking would be determined on the basis of visual cleanliness, solid waste management, advocacy of cleanliness, separation of wet and dry waste, door-to-door garbage collection, transportation of garbage, access to sanitation, used water management, ecosystem strengthening and institutional parameters, he added.

He said the parameters also included mechanisms of disposing service, overall welfare of sanitation workers, citizens feedback and grievance redressal. Pooja appealed to citizens to separate the dry and wet garbage of their households, and dispose of it only in municipal corporation vehicles.

She also appealed to citizens to carry cloth bags to purchase goods, and to avoid using single-use plastic items.

Gupta said it was the responsibility of the municipal corporation as well as the general public to get the best ranking for the twin cities.

“Everyone should cooperate in this campaign of the MC,” Gupta added.

During the programme, Dutt honoured the school principal with a memento for his cooperation in the survey.
