The joint committee will include councillors and officials of the MC.

MC officials would provide a cleaning schedule to the councillors so that they, too, can monitor the cleaning of drains.

The decision was taken in a meeting held recently under the chairmanship of Mayor Suman Bahamani.

The issue of waterlogging was taken up seriously during the meeting. The season’s first rain, which occurred a few days ago, left several areas of twin cities waterlogged severely.

During the meeting, the sanitation wing of the MC was instructed to maintain coordination with councillors, and take immediate action on their complaints.

She gave strict instructions to officials and agencies associated with the cleaning of drains that if such a situation arose again, strict action would be taken against the officials and agency contractors concerned.

The Mayor said officials should take seriously the complaints sent by councillors over phone or in writing, and ensure quick resolution.

She instructed officials to ensure that damaged streetlights in waterlogged areas are repaired immediately.

The Mayor instructed the officials concerned to identify encroachments on the drains, and prepare a detailed report in this regard.

She said encroachments hindered the regular cleaning of drains, and worsened the problem of waterlogging.

Meanwhile, MC Commissioner Akhil Pilani and Additional Municipal Commissioner Dheeraj Kumar inspected areas which were waterlogged during the first rain of the season.

Pilani instructed officials and contractors to clean blocked drains properly and remove encroachments.

He also instructed officials to immediately repair chambers of drains, if found jammed or otherwise damaged.
