10 lakh die of diabetes every year, says expert

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the Health Department today organised an awareness camp at Government Senior Secondary School at Samoor Kalan village.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Raman Sharma said there were about 7 crore diabetics in the country, of which about 10 lakh died every year. According to the World Health Organisation, India will be a diabetes capital in the next few years.

The CMO said diabetes was more common among people who were obese and living a sedentary lifestyle, adding that bad eating habits also caused the disease. Patients should get check-ups done on a regular basis as it primarily affected eyes, heart and kidneys, he added.
