In a major push to enhance fishery-based livelihoods and conserve aquatic biodiversity, the Department of Fisheries, Himachal Pradesh, under the supervision of the Deputy Director, Trout Farm Patlikuhal, released nearly 10,000 trout fingerlings into various water bodies in the Lahaul-Spiti district.
The stocking, conducted yesterday, included both Brown and Rainbow Trout, valued for their resilience and commercial potential. The release was carried out at key locations: Sissu Lake (1,500 fingerlings), Goshal village (3,000), Bhaga River near Jispa (3,000), and Deepak Tal Lake (2,500).
This effort is part of an ongoing initiative to restore aquatic ecosystems and promote fisheries as a means of self-employment, especially for rural youth. The regular stocking of fish seed in streams, rivers, and lakes across Himachal Pradesh aims to balance ecological restoration with economic growth.
Local participation was notable, with elected representatives and residents from the Gram Panchayats of Sissu, Goshal, and Jispa actively joining the release. Officials present included Arun Kant, Deputy Director, Trout Farm Patlikuhal; Gopal Chauhan, Fisheries Officer; and Dev Raj, Fisheries Inspector.
Deputy Director Arun Kant emphasized the importance of community vigilance to curb illegal fishing. He urged locals and panchayat leaders to support the department in safeguarding aquatic resources for future generations.
Vivek Chandel, Director-cum-Warden of Fisheries, highlighted the department’s commitment to fish stocking and biodiversity conservation. He noted that such initiatives not only protect the environment but also align with the state’s goal of creating sustainable, alternative livelihoods such as trout farming and sport fishing.
The department expressed hope that the stocked fingerlings would thrive, contributing to a vibrant fisheries sector in the Lahaul Valley.
