MCM DAV Senior Secondary Public School, Baghni (Nurpur), commemorated the 135th birth anniversary of third Chief Justice of India Mehar Chand Mahajan with enthusiasm last evening on the school premises. Lieutenant General Paramjit Singh Sangha (retd.) presided over the celebrations whereas Justice (retd) CK Mahajan, chairman of the school management committee, was guest of honour on this occasion.

The celebrations began by performing havan. It was followed by lighting ceremonial lamp by the Chief Guest. A floral homage was paid to the bust of Justice Mahajan. The tiny tots of the school showcased their stage performances reflecting the diversity of Indian culture, representing Haryanvi, Kashmiri, Himachali and Punjabi folk dances. Trisha, a student of class X, delivered an inspirational speech on the life and legacy of the late Justice Mahajan, recounting his remarkable contribution to the nation.

The Chief Guest delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the life and achievements of Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan. He said Justice Mahajan was born in 1889 at Tika Nagrota village in Nurpur. He started his career as a lawyer in 1913 in Dharamsala.

“After that, he practised law in Lahore from 1918 to 1943. He was appointed the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on October 15, 1947 and served on that post till March 5, 1948. While serving on this post he had played a role in the state’s accession to India,” he said.

The Chief Guest said Justice Mahajan had took over as the third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India on January 4, 1954 and continued on the post till his retirement on December 22, 1954.
