‘1,376 km roads, 116 bridges linking remote villages built in state in past two years’
As many as 1,376 km of roads and 1,192 km of cross-drainage systems have been built in the state in the past two years, connecting remote villages. Besides, 1,741 km of roads have been metalled and tarred to ensure smooth and durable transport links.
“Spearheaded by the Public Works Department (PWD), these developments have brought mobility and economic opportunity closer to the doorsteps of countless families in the previously inaccessible areas,” said a government spokesperson.
He said that the road access had been extended to 61 census villages, ensuring equitable development even for the remotest corners of the state. Furthermore, 116 bridges have been constructed over challenging terrains, which has not just bridged the physical gaps but also enabled communities to stay connected to essential services and markets.
“The ambitious double-lane tunnel project spanning 890 meters promises to be a game-changer for Shimla. This state-of-the-art tunnel will link Navbahar to the Circular Road near the Indira Gandhi Medical College, which would alleviate the traffic congestion and make commuting faster and smoother. With Rs. 100 crore already earmarked and a total estimated cost of Rs 295 crore, this project epitomises forward-thinking urban planning,” the spokesperson said.
He said that the state government had allocated Rs 2,806 crore to the PWD for this financial year. “By the end of September 2024, Rs 1,238 crore had already been utilised to turn plans into action. The timely execution of these projects underscores the efficiency and unwavering focus of the government on results,” he added.
He said the achievements reflect the government’s commitment to bridging distances and transforming lives. Improved road networks have enhanced access to healthcare, education, markets and tourism of the state, which is strengthening the social and economic fabric while unlocking new opportunities for the prosperity of the people of the state.
