Fifteen participants being trained in the ice hockey rink at Kaza in Lahaul and Spiti district today left for the advance ice hockey camp to be organised at Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir from January 1 to January 14. Kaza Additional District Magistrate Gyan Sagar Negi, while addressing the participants, said it was a historic day for Lahaul and Spiti that eight girls and seven boys were going to the national ice hockey camp for the first time from Kaza.

The ADM said youngsters of the district had been imparted basic training and 15 had been selected for advanced coaching. He said players of the district now had a chance to get selected in the national team. He said this will increase enthusiasm of the youth in ice hockey. He said that the state government was promoting winter sports at Lahaul and Spiti and it will be very beneficial for the masses and also tourism industry and economy of the region.

Camp National Coach Amit Berwal said 30 children had been selected for basic training and 15 of them had been sent to Gulmarg for the advance basic camp along with three coaches Sonam Chhodan, Lobjang Chhojam and Chhaving Dorje. He said, “Spiti’s environment is quite conducive for winter sports and our goal is that children from the region should participate at the national and international levels. The 15 member contingent comprises eight girls — Karma Yeshi Khando (12), Chhering Dolma (13), Nawang Lamo (15), Sonam Angmo (12), Rigzin Dolma (13), Tenzin Dolma, Nawang Chhutik, and Sonam Dechen — and seven boys — Son Bangchuk (12), Kunga Bangpo (12), Tenzin Yoten, Takpa Yeshe (15), Tenzin Jangwo (12), Dhodup Gyalsan (13) and Sonam Dorje (12).
