About 150 students from 17 colleges participated in the three-day Inter College Shooting Competition at the newly set up shooting range at Government Degree College, Nalagarh. The tournament concluded on Thursday.
Built at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, the shooting range has create an interest among the students to participate in the sport.
MLA Ram Kumar Choudhary, who inaugurated the shooting range, said the state government was working to provide a better environment to the youth in sports.
While the educational infrastructure was being strengthened at the school and college level in the state, sports stadiums were being constructed on a phased basis to provide better sports facilities to the youth, he added.
The MLA said the state government had taken steps to promote sports, and there had been an unprecedented increase in the honorarium of the players winning medals at the international level.
“The prize money for players winning gold medals in an individual event at the Olympics has been increased from Rs 3 crore to Rs 5 crore. Similarly, the honorarium for players winning silver medals has been increased from Rs 2 crore to Rs 3 crore, and the prize money for players winning bronze medals has been increased from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore. This has encouraged players,” the MLA said. Chaudhary said the state government had started new courses for the youth in accordance with the future demand for strengthening technical education.
“Drone service technician courses have been started in various technical educational institutions. These courses will create employment and self-employment opportunities for the youth,” he added.
