163rd Founder's Day celebrated at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla
Shimla, July 29
A leading heritage school, Bishop Cotton School (BCS) celebrated its 163rd Founder’s Day here today.
Wreaths were laid in honour of Bishop George Edward Cotton, the school’s founder.
Bishop Cotton founded the school after visiting Shimla and acquiring land where the current school campus now sits. The annual TM Whitmarsh Knight Lecture took place after a chapel service amid singing by the school choir. Avay Shukla, a retired bureaucrat, environmentalist and writer, delivered the lecture. He impressed upon the young Cottonians that they would have to invest themselves in the future of India, both politically and environmentally.
The assembled gathering, including many old Cottonians, gave a rousing send off to the Class XII mountaineering team as it set off to climb Mount Yunam (6,111 mts) on the annual BCS expedition.
The BCS is an institution rooted in history and tradition. Over decades, its alumni have included some of the most distinguished men in India and abroad. From uniformed services to administrators, from businessmen and industrialists, to authors and actors, the BCS has nurtured nascent talents and helped them come to fruition.
