Bishop Cotton School (BCS) celebrated the 165th anniversary Speech Day with an impressive march past, along with the school band and the NCC parade.

Director General of Police Atul Verma was the guest of honour on the occasion. In his speech, Dr Verma said character development takes place in a school, which plays a key role in the success of any individual in later life. He lauded the school for excellent achievements in both academic and co-curricular fields.

“My philosophy is that the carrot usually works much better than the stick. A smiling child achieves more than a scared one. External discipline has its uses, but ultimately our boys must develop internal discipline to cope with the challenges that life will throw at them,” said BCS Director Simon Weale. “If the students leave school without having internal discipline, we are not doing our job,” he remarked.

Later the winners were felicitated with awards in the historic Irwin Hall. The main House cups were won by Lefroy and Ibbetson. Uco Bank Junior School (prep school) Study Cup was won by Lefroy House, Chelmsford Senior School Study Cup by Ibbetson House, Bayliss Shield by Ibbetson House, Grindlays Games and Sports Cup by Lefroy House and Cock House Shield by Lefroy House. The gathering remembered an alumnus, DC Anand, and Sunita John, Head of Auckland House for 26 years, who passed away recently.
