Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh today said that more than 1,900 roads and bridges have been constructed in the last two years and work was underway to widen and pave 3,700 km of roads.

He was speaking at the annual program of Sunni Bhajji Student Union and Youth Organisation, held here today. He said that road works worth Rs 250 crore were being undertaken in Shimla Rural assembly constituency. He said that fulfilling the long-standing demand of the people of the area, an SDM office had been sanctioned for Sunni, which would start functioning soon.

The minister said a provision of Rs 40 crore had been made for the upgradation of Salapad-Tatapani-Luhri road. “Discussions are underway with the Union Road Ministry to convert this road into a National Highway as this will help provide better commuting facilities to the people,” he said.

Urging the youth to stay away from drugs, he said they must engage in activities like sports and cultural presentations. “The government is trying to provide different platforms to the youth to showcase their talent. Shimla Winter Carnival is one such event which has been started along with summer festivals and other programmes to provide one such platform,” he said.

He said apart from having star performances by big artistes, the endeavour should be to give a chance to the local artists, famous singers from Himachal. “The holding of winter carnival has attracted tourists in large numbers, a big boost to the tourism sector,” he said.
