31 tourists go missing while trekking from Hamta Pass to Chhatru, rescued

Displaying commendable efficiency and dedication, the Lahaul-Spiti district police successfully conducted a rescue operation yesterday, ensuring early recovery of 31 trekkers who had gone missing while trekking from Hamta Pass to Chhatru.

According to the police, the group, which was expected to reach Chhatru within a scheduled timeframe, could not reach there, triggering concern among local authorities and family members. Upon receiving the alert regarding the missing trekkers, the district police recognised the potential risk to life due to the harsh terrain and unpredictable weather conditions in the region.

“A rescue team was promptly rushed from Koksar to locate the missing group. Thanks to the quick response by the district police, all 31 trekkers were safely located within a short period. Following the rescue, each trekker’s family was informed about their safety, providing much-needed relief to the worried relatives,” said a police spokesperson.

The district police emphasised that such swift action was made possible due to their well-coordinated protocols, preparedness for mountain emergencies and commitment to public safety.

A police spokesperson said, “We remain vigilant and prepared to respond to emergencies in these high-altitude and remote regions.” The incident underlines the importance of monitoring trekking routes and the need for better communication facilities in remote regions.
