315 out of 2,072 fingerprints of repeat offenders: Expert

A total of 315 fingerprint slips out of the 2,072 that were transmitted to the national database during the past three months have been of repeat offenders.
First FingerPrint Bureau

This has stated by Director, Forensics Services, Himachal Pradesh, Dr Meenakshi Mahajan, here today.
She said the Himachal Pradesh State Fingerprint Bureau was accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) as per the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 to bring quality in forensic reports in 2024 and become the first Fingerprint Bureau in North India to get accreditation and second after Gujarat.
“The Himachal Pradesh Fingerprint Bureau is continuously being strengthened by way of addition of new tools and techniques like FOCUS, Cyanoacrylate fuming chamber etc. The National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), given by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), was installed in 2021 with the vision to digitising the entire fingerprint database,” she said.
“The chance prints found at the crime scene and slips recorded by the police can be transmitted electronically for their comparison with the database to get the results within four-five minutes. The comparison will show past history, if any” she said.
“With the new addition of the Forenscope machine, costing about Rs 30 lakh, fingerprints can be directly recorded even from porous surfaces without using the fingerprint powder,” she added.
“A three days training was imparted to the experts of Finger Print Bureau and scene of crime officers from July 25 to 27 to use modern equipment in the investigations,” she said.
