39 in police net for cheating in NVS recruitment exam

As many as 39 persons, 34 men and five women, have been arrested for allegedly cheating in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) recruitment exam by using tiny earpieces and bluetooth devices in Shimla, police said here today.

Sharing details on Monday evening, police stated that the accused hail from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan, who were arrested from six examination centres set up to conduct the exams.

According to reports, the matter came to light when one of the candidates, who had appeared in the exam at New Shimla examination centre, was checked by the invigilator upon suspicion of cheating after he kept asking for permission to visit washroom. During the checking, the invigilator found a Bluetooth device and a tiny earpiece from his possession. After this, the invigilator checked other candidates who were present in the centre and caught several others with Bluetooth devices.

One person was arrested in Shimla for appearing in the same examination in place of another candidate.

The accused has been identified as Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Haryana. He had appeared in the exam in place of Ajay Kumar, the actual candidate. Wrongdoing emerged when the invigilator noticed that the signature and photograph of the candidate, who appeared in the examination, did not match with the one present in the document. On suspicion, he informed the police, who reached there spot and immediately arrested the accused.

A case under section 319(2) (cheating by personation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 has been registered against the accused and further investigation is going on.

According to police, a total 5 FIRs have been registered and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shimla has been constituted to investigate the matter. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the candidates had allegedly paid between Rs 4 lakhs and Rs 12 lakhs to unknown persons in order to clear the exam by cheating during the exam.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rattan Negi confirmed the report and said that cases under relevant sections of Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) and BNS 2023 have been lodged against the accused and further investigation is underway.

The NVS examination is being held across the country to fill around 1,377 non-teaching posts.
