4 yrs on, musical fountain in Palampur awaits repair
Palampur’s first musical fountain, installed in front of the Municipal Council office at Sita Ram Park, has remained non-functional for the past four years, despite repeated pleas from residents. The fountain, a major attraction, was installed five years ago by the former municipal council. However, after the formation of the new Municipal Corporation in 2021, it was taken over along with other assets but has since been left in neglect.
Sita Ram Park is one of the most frequented spots in town, attracting hundreds of visitors daily, including senior citizens who use it for walks and leisure. However, the authorities have not only ignored the fountain but also the park, which is now in dire need of maintenance. With no other major recreational space in town, residents are growing increasingly frustrated with the corporation’s inaction.
According to The Tribune, the musical fountain was constructed by a private contractor at a cost of over Rs 15 lakh from the state exchequer. However, it barely functioned for three months before breaking down. Since then, no repair efforts have been made. The stagnant water in the fountain now emits a foul odor, and garbage is frequently found littered around the structure, further adding to the park’s deteriorating condition.
A senior officer of the Palampur Municipal Corporation admitted that the fountain has become obsolete and may not be repairable. However, he assured that under an upcoming beautification project for the town, the fountain would either be restored or replaced. While officials claim to be aware of the situation, no concrete action has been taken yet.
Local residents have repeatedly urged the authorities to make the fountain operational. Social activist BK Sood pointed out that despite being situated right in front of the MC office, officials have failed to address the issue. The matter was even raised with the local MLA, who had promised a resolution but failed to act.
Citizens are now demanding urgent intervention, as the neglected fountain stands as a symbol of administrative apathy. They hope that the municipal corporation will finally take responsibility and restore the park to its former glory.
