Sujanpur town in Hamirpur district is gearing up for its grand Dasehra, where towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarna and Meghnad rise sky-high at the historic Chaugan ground. This year, Ravana’s figure will soar nearly 40 feet, while his brothers-in-arms stand 30–35 feet tall, ready to be engulfed in flames amid chants and cheers.
What began decades ago as a modest village gathering has now transformed into a nine-day spectacle, drawing crowds from Hamirpur, Palampur and nearby villages. The celebration, led by the Kali Mata Temple committee, not only enacts the timeless Ramlila but also adds fresh grandeur every year.
On the eve of Dasehra, a spirited victory procession of Lord Rama coursed through the town, setting the festive tone. “It started small, but now it’s one of the biggest melas in the region,” said Ashwani Walia, a committee contributor. For locals and visitors alike, Sujanpur’s Dasehra is not just tradition — it’s an experience in living history.
