In a case of gold theft, an Ambala-based jeweller has alleged that gold ornaments worth several crores — around 5 kg — were stolen during a business trip to Anni in Kullu district this August.
According to police reports, the complainant, Rahul Mittal, a resident of Old Post Office Road, Ambala, has been in the gold and silver jewellery trade for the past six years. He frequently travels across Himachal Pradesh to supply ornaments, investing his own capital in the business.
In his complaint, Mittal stated that on August 2, he travelled to Anni with his associate, Sanjeev Kumar, in a car carrying about 5 kg of gold jewellery. However, he alleged that Sanjeev Kumar, in connivance with his brother Hemant, his son Sujal and another individual named Sandeep, plotted the theft of the ornaments along with the vehicle.
Mittal claimed the jewellery disappeared under mysterious circumstances, suspecting his business associate and his family’s involvement in the heist. Acting on his complaint, the Kullu police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Kullu SP Karthikeyan Gokulachandran confirmed that the police are probing the allegations and collecting evidence. He noted that while a car theft was reported by Sanjeev Kumar two months ago, Mittal has now alleged that the same associate, along with his family members, orchestrated the entire theft.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accused may have exploited Mittal’s trust and planned the crime in advance. The stolen gold, valued in crores, marks one of the most significant jewellery thefts reported in the region this year.
Police officials said they are examining multiple angles, including the accused’s movements, vehicle tracking data and any underlying financial disputes between the parties.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local jewellery trade community, which largely operates on trust-based cash and gold transactions. Authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to recover the stolen ornaments and bring the culprits to justice.
