As many as 500 saplings of deodar were planted by the staff and students of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, during the Van Mahotsav celebrations today.
Besides, 150 saplings of Kachnar and Beul would also be planted near the university dairy to enhance the fodder stock.
Vice-Chancellor Rajeshwar Singh Chandel said activities like Van Mahotsav had gained more importance today due to the threat of climate change. He said, “Developing countries like India are facing several challenges from climate change as development activities have to be carried out in many sectors. Planned sapling plantations can contribute towards mitigating climate change.”
He urged the staff and students of the university to adopt and ensure survivability of every sapling. He asked the scientists to study carbon sequestration due to their plantation activities. Director Extension Education Dr Divender Gupta said a severe heatwave in many European countries was a reminder for everyone about how climate change could affect our lives.
Vimal Chauhan, Head of Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry, gave a brief background about the Van Mahotsav.
