Shimla, June 20
Member, National Security Advisory Board, Devendra Kumar Sharma has described 5Gi in India as a major step towards global technological leadership in the telecommunication sector.
“The next generation telecommunication network is 5G and India that has a large customer base of cellphones is moving fast towards achieving global leadership in the field of telecommunication,” he said in statement issued here today.
He said for any country to achieve leadership in a particular domain, it was absolutely necessary to develop its technological base and own intellectual property rights in that domain and as such development in telecommunication was very important for India.
The Indian industry and academia have developed an indigenous standard, named 5Gi (5G-India), that
would enable larger mobile coverage than the current global 5G standard, he added.
The overall coordination for its development has been done by Prof V Kamakoti of IIT-Madras and Member, National Security Advisory Board.
The 5Gi is a strict superset of 5G and would be a boon for people of rural India as 5Gi would ensure large coverage at lower cost.
